Bikes Bikes Baby
Written by Yalei Wang

Easy to ride? Easy on the wallet? Or perhaps simply easy on the eye? If you own a bike and you live in Melbourne, then chances are you purchased one according to these three categories. Slowly but surely over the last few years, cycling has become relevant to the citizens of Melbourne as a means of transport, an economical god-send, and even as a fashion accessory. But why now, and why bicycles? Why not a moped, a scooter, or even a motorbike?

Complex Geometries with FAT
Written by Emma Do
Monday, 29 March 2010 17:49

Held at RMIT Alumni Court at the old Melbourne Gaol, all historical morbidity was shoved aside on Wednesday night to make way for FAT’s rather simple showcasing of Montreal label Complex Geometries. The event heralded quite the turnout- edgy young things came for the clothes and stayed for the good vibes radiating all round.

Dai Fujiwara

There's something humbling about Dai Fujiwara as he addresses a packed out lecture theatre at Melbourne's RMIT. Maybe it's his interpretation of the English language, or perhaps his stereotypically petite Japanese frame? Whichever it is, the creative director of Issey Miyake certainly manages to win over his patient listeners with a rare and insightful talk about the brand that many (including myself) had left behind in the nineties.

I know everyone’s schedule is overflowing this week with LMFF and the never-ending sideshow events happening all over Melbourne, but I do recommend an event you pen in your diaries, not pencil. I SPY will be presenting the I Spy The Start of Something photography exhibition, which explores the hidden work of contemporary designers Yeojin Bae, Dhini, Monika from TV, Kate Rodgers from Dazed & Confused/Conde Nast and Karla Way.

There's a buzz around Insert Coin Here, a group exhibition held in two vending machines roving the streets of Melbourne. Curated by Nella Themelios and Kim Brockett, this show sees 'fashion objects' by over 60 artists and designers - including Dylan Martorell, Sarah McNeil and Jarrod Zlatic - dispensed randomly to the public for $2 a pop.

We were lucky enough to receive a much sought after invitation to a once in a life time event: the very first screening of both Friedrich Gray and Romance was Born's AW2010 collection concept short films.

Comeback Kid always know how to throw an amazing party. We should know - they've kindly collaborated with yours truly before! Last wednesday was absolutely no exception, with Pat and Greta putting on another crazy-kid-fun party as part of the Cultural Program of LMFF. Fashion Racquet at Penthouse Mouse featured the awesome DJ skills of none other than Miami Horror and Architecture in Helsinki. For seriously, we don't even know how the Comeback Kid team scores talent such as this - they obviously have their fingers in some serious pies.

The Unwearables

A catwalk extravaganza and interactive show; Unwearables featured the gloriously non-functional fashion creations of Kasia Gorniak with Laurie Luxe, Michelle Boyde, Sarah Martinus and Daniel Cremona (just to name a few). Held at the Order of Melbourne - a bar becoming known for its fashion collaborations - it was a night to remember.

Oak off Chapel
Written by Phoebe Montague
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:00

Aside from their obsession with black, most Melburnians are proud of that ‘hidden’ aspect that dominates most of the city’s coveted boutiques. The ‘find-me-if-you-can’ approach to retail is amusing (if not peculiar). This said, Oak off Chapel seem to have found all the ingredients for the perfect Melbourne hide-away. Off the street? Check. Down a lane? Check. Minimal signage? Absolutely.

Penthouse Mouse Opens
Written by Hayley Hughes
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:31

Penthouse Mouse is arguably one of Melbourne Street Fashion.com's most anticipated LMFF event. This year's opening proved once again why. Held in the old Naval and Millitary club; the venue was a labyrinth packed with lots of nooks and crannies, and had a wonderfully retro vibe. The wood panelled bar and old squash courts added a surprising element to the mix of the designers and artists whose work was on show.

It is without surprise that Trimäpee have decided to forge their creative prowess and unconventional design into art. And what better time than now to showcase their artistic talent with a in-store installation at their newly launched spot in Melbourne’s QV? Expect conceptual expression, thematic twists, refined detailing - and that’s not just for the clothes either! - as the boys at Trimapee continue to re-define themselves by constantly re-establishing their identity further and further away from mainstream banalities.

Welcome to Smith St, Collingwood
Written by Meera Sanghvi

Smith St, Collingwood - or Fitzroy, depending on which side of the road you’re standing on - could best be described as a vagabond’s paradise. A slightly rough-around-the-edges little sister to Brunswick St and perpindicular to darling sweetheart Gertrude St; the strip offers a younger variety of diversity, rebellion and grunge that these others grew out of years ago.

Studio Visit: Phong Chi Lai
Written by Emilia Terzon
Tuesday, 13 October 2009 11:16

Situated between a cobblestone alleyway and a rather good op-shop can be found the very best type of footwear designer. Now, just what type is that, we hear you ask? To be precise: the type who is educated in the craft of hand-made production, who welcomes you warmly with a mug of water and a cosy stool to sit on, and invites you to prance/stumble around his whirring communal studio decked out in a pair of the most heavenly of avant-garde wooden wedges.
